FAQs

What Is the East Side Energy Storage Project?

East Side Energy Storage is a 300MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project being developed and planned across two phases within Wyandotte County. The Project will store low-cost grid energy and convert it to a critically useful capacity resource that is dispatchable when prices are otherwise high, helping to reduce costs for families and businesses.

East Side Energy Storage is a resilient, clean and cost-effective solution to an increasing demand for reliable domestic energy. The Project will assist energy providers in building on a strong track record of serving customers safely, reliably, and affordably.

What Impacts Do Solar Projects Have On The Local Area?

Energy storage is generally very low impact, and Birdseye Energy Storage is not expected to have any significant impacts on local residents, the environment, or cultural resources. On the plus side, adding energy storage to the electrical grid makes it more resilient and reliable, and can help facilitate the integration of zero-carbon resources like wind and solar.

Why Is The East Side Energy Storage Project Being Planned In Wyandotte County?

East Side Energy Storage is strategically located on the grid to optimize energy delivery, reduce congestion related price spikes, and deliver cost savings to families and businesses. The site selected for the Project was based on a comprehensive review including environmental issues, design constraints, proximity to existing infrastructure and potential community impacts.

Are Battery Energy Storage Systems Safe?

Yes. Safety is fundamental to all parts of our electrical grid, including battery energy storage, and because the project will be connected to the electrical grid, it will be subject to significant oversight and strict safety regulations that are frequently updated.  The project will be monitored 24/7 by trained personnel prepared to maintain safety and respond to emergency events in coordination with local emergency responders as necessary. In addition, the project will use advanced emergency mitigation and suppression systems where each component has its place and functions to provide layered protection. As a result of these mitigation measures, safety incidents involving battery energy storage systems are extremely rare.
